Mnemonics

Use mnemonics to help you remember a particularly hard to spell word.

Remember there is no right or wrong way to do this. It is completely personal and in fact the more unusual the better!

Simply focus on a word that you find difficult. Write it out accurately - look carefully at the letters and decide which part of the word is giving you problems.

See if you can make up a mnemonic (a way of helping you remember) to remind yourself of the letters.

I had a student who found the spelling of 'December' difficult. She kept forgetting the 'c' in the word. She made up this mnemonic about her Mum, Donna:

For example 'Donna Eats Chocolate Every Month' is a mnemonic for the beginning of the word December. Once you start looking at words in this way, it's fun to try and think up new stategies for those that cause you problems. Gif of pile of books
