Educational Gifts For ChildrenBeing a teacher I couldn't resist a page on Educational Gifts For Children! What follows is a selection of very popular educational gift ideas that will engage the brain as well as being fun. Let's start with a game that would work well for the younger child. Shopping List There are 4 shopping lists, 4 shopping trolleys and 32 item cards with pictures of foodstuffs and other things that you can buy in the supermarket. Each player takes a shopping list and a trolley, and all the item cards are placed faced down. Players then take turns to pick cards and try to find the ones which match the pictures on their shopping list. The aim is to fill your trolley with the items on your list before anyone else gets all their things. An extemely popular, low tech game that will really engage pre-schoolers. Recommended for ages 4 - 8, the Leapfrog Tag Reading System (Green) There is lots of attention to detail in the books and children can simply listen to the stories or interact with them. Amazon has a special Leapfrog Store The LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Tablet in Green It has a built-in camera, video recorder, and a huge library of games and activities including apps, an art studio and a storybook studio. If your child is fascinated by your i-phone or i-pad, get them this! They won't be disappointed - and they'll leave you alone! Bananagrams Everyone who plays it seems to love it - plus the banana case is fun! Scaredy Cat The aim of the game is to assemble a scarecrow while collecting birds. When a Scaredy Cat is drawn however, the birds 'fly away' ie. you have to put them back! When the Scarecrow is complete, the player with the most birds wins. This is a well established, low tech game that works on many levels - and most importantly, children love it! BrainBox World You have 10 seconds in which to memorise as much information as possible about a country - flags, towns, exports etc. Then you roll a dice and have to answer a numbered question about the country. If you answer correctly, you keep the card for that country. The person with the most number of cards at the end of the game wins. The egg timer and dice add excitement and children learn while they play. There are many other Brainbox Games I couldn't finish this page without a mention of Rush Hour Junior. It's a game that starts off in quite a straightforward way, building up children's confidence and developing strategic thinking as well as coordination. There are 40 graded levels building up in a very cumulative way. Children play on their own working out how to remove one of the cars by sliding the other vehicles around the board. Every child I've introduced this game to - from 6 to 11 has loved it. For older children, I would say for 9+, the original Rush Hour Traffic Jam Puzzle Game Search here for more Educational Gifts on Amazon.co.uk Click here for a selection of Books For Reluctant Readers.
