Pattern focus: igh words

• Start with the one syllable words and build up to words like 'midnight' and 'delight'
• point out the silent 'k' in the word 'knight' and maybe introduce the term 'homophone' ie. words that sound the same but are spelt differently
• 'I've got hot toes' is a useful mnemonic for 'ight' words and many of my students remember the letters this way!
• for visual learners (and many dyslexic children are) a good starting point is a picture (labelled) which the child draws and which links as many of these words together as possible.
  
  For example the knight is on a high horse - he is riding at night - the moon is very bright - and so on. It's best to read through the words together and let the child make up the story and the picture.
• never assume that because you've covered this pattern in a lesson, it has been remembered. You may need to return frequently and practise writing the words. I've found that a word family picture definitely cements these words in the child's mind.
