Improve spelling . . . here are some adult-appropriate suggestions to help improve your spelling.

  • Aide-memoire

  • It’s not cheating to have an aide-memoire for those spellings that cause you the most trouble. If there are words that are regularly needed at work for example, then write them down and perhaps underline the letters that you need to remember. Our page on difficult spellings has some ideas for helping to remember tricky words.

  • Songs

  • If you are more of an auditory learner (perhaps you prefer to listen to Talking Books, or maybe you are very musical) you may like to think about putting the letters of a word into familiar songs. There is a children’s song called Bingo about a dog, and the chorus starts B - I - N,G,O with the dog’s name spelt out. I often use this little tune replacing the dog’s name with the five vowels to help children remember them. So we have, A-E-I,O,U instead of B-I-N,G,O!
There’s also a Dolly Parton tune called D*I*V*O*R*C*E where this word is spelt out in the chorus. If you’re having trouble with a seven letter word then put those letters in the song title’s place!

For example, the word ‘success’ often catches people out. Try replacing

    D*I*V*O*R*C*E with

    S*U*C*C*E*S*S or

    P*O*S*S*E*S*S or

    V*I*C*I*O*U*S or

    V*I*S*I*T*O*R and so on!

  • Use a dictionary

  • This may sound rather flippant but even ‘good’ spellers use dictionaries. Make sure you’re familiar with alphabetical order or else this will slow you down.

Think of the letters that split the alphabet up into four chunks: a, e, n, s

‘a’ is obviously right at the beginning
‘e’ is about a quarter of the way through
‘n’ is roughly in the middle of the dictionary
‘s’ is approximately three-quarters of the way through

Practise thinking of a word eg.supper, and opening the dictionary at approximately the right point. This will considerably speed things up when searching for a word.

    Alternatively use an electronic dictionary.

These sound scarier than they actually are and children love them! The one I use (Franklin LWB1216 Childrens Dictionary & Spellchecker) is a little bigger than a cassette tape (remember those??) and you simply type in your word.

On mine, even if you type in 'caset' for 'cassette' it will recognise it and give you the correct spelling, its meaning and if appropriate the origin of the word.
