Magic e wordsHere is a list of common magic e words - it is by no means an exhaustive list! The magic e on the end of the word - for example in the word pane, makes the a in the word say its name. ie its name in the alphabet. This is called a long a as opposed to a short a as in the word pan. The a-e in the word pane is also known as a split digraph. Many children have trouble with the magic e concept. How to helpDraw pictures on the cards below (or ask your children to) in order to illustrate these words. Try sorting the list into words with a short vowel (tap) and those with a long vowel (tape). Remember that spelling magic e words can take a considerable amount of repetition. Never assume that after one or two sessions the student has 'got it'.
